VW made what was essentially a Mk1 Golf up to 2010 in South Africa. You all know this, I’m sure. However, they also made the same in 1994. And being that 1994 is about a decade younger than any Mk1 that’s in America by birth, it would almost make sense to import one. Let’s hit the web, shall we?

Cursory googling would imply nobody has yet imported a Citi Golf to the US from South Africa. However, browsing Gumtree ZA’s Cars and Bakkies section shows that a well-sorted and clean Citi Golf can be had for 35000 Rand, which is, at press time, $2362.48 in ‘Merica bucks. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

So... why is nobody importing these? And why should I not start planning right now such that I can import one in, say, two years time?

People aren’t importing non-GTI Mk I Golfs because they are hateful cars.

It’s not that I like old VWs, it's that I hate myself. Plus that one has the 1.8 that's specced at 124hp

People import older stuff with less crash structure. Nobody really imports for safety’s sake.

T hat nose sure is >ahem< unusual ... and the rear bumper looks like it was made for another vehicle and just clipped on.

The late-model VW Cabriolet actually was pretty similar to the Citi, and lasted until well into the early 90s even if it was based on the Mk1.

Kinja'd!!!

IMO, a later 90s Citi isn’t really worth importing. The sweet spot is either a late model one with the newer Skoda-derived dashboard, or an early “red-yellow-blue” one (as that’s by far the most iconic version).

And, if you make your way north to Canada or south to Latin America, you can get yourself a Golf City (or in Latin America, a “Clasico”), which was originally known in Canada as the City Golf. Maybe they wanted to make money off Canada’s relatively existing South African expat/immigrant population. Who knows. It is a remarkably similar car in concept to the Citi, though instead of facelifting Mk1 to look like a Mk2, they facelifted the Mk4 to look like the Mk5.

Absolutely nowhere near worth the RHD hassles.

Listen, you c an live your life however you want, but what you’re essentially saying with this is you want to pay, when all is said and done, well over 6 or 7 grand for a Mk1 golf. That’s why no one is importing them - we alread y have them.  A nd I feel like you have to already know you’re the most diehard of diehard enthusiasts to do this. It’s a bit different, but not excessively so like getting a JDM or Euro forbidden fruit that never made their way to our shores before.

Honestly, I’d hunt down a decent 1991/1992 Scirocco instead. But that’s me.

I’ve actually seen a couple of Citi Golfs here in the US. I think the biggest draw back is that they’re RHD so making a daily out of that is a bit of a pain.
